Diastemas And How Treatment Can Close The Gap

Prominently situated at the front of our mouths are our incisors, two large sharp teeth referred to as our “front teeth.” They’re also known by less complimentary terms as “buck teeth.” While it can be embarrassing for them to grow in before our other adult teeth, we’ll grow out of that phase, and they’ll be another part of a complete smile. However, when a gap forms between them, it can be a reason for feeling self-conscious about sharing our smiles. Thankfully these gaps, known as diastema, can be treated by the team at 3D Dentistry.

Diastemas And How Treatment Can Close The Gap

There is a range of things that can bring about a diastema. One common cause stems from childhood and is the result of a poor swallowing reflex. This reflex creates a behavior known as ‘tongue-thrusting,’ in which children press their tongue against the front teeth while swallowing. Over the fullness of time, this can lead to the teeth slowly being pushed out of position, resulting in the formation of a diastema. However, this is just one potential cause. Other reasons we may develop a diastema are genetic in nature, caused by front teeth that grow smaller than usual. One other potential childhood cause is a lip or tongue tie. These ties involve an overgrown frenulum, the tissue that ties the gum to the lip or the tongue to the bottom of the mouth.

Some of the treatments used to close the diastema include:

  • Porcelain Veneers – These thin porcelain shells are carefully designed to fit over your teeth and obscure the presence of the gap. They can also address chips, cracks, and discoloration with ease. The ability to address multiple concerns simultaneously makes them a popular cosmetic option.
  • Dental Bonding – Dental composite is made from glass and a special resin and is a versatile option for treating cosmetic needs. It can be used to discretely fill the gaps between our teeth and otherwise reshape the appearance of our smile. This material is applied to the teeth in a single visit, yielding instant results.
  • Dental Crowns – If you have teeth that are exceptionally small or damaged, dental crowns may be your solution of choice. The teeth are reshaped with dental crowns to serve as a mounting point, and a full prosthodontic, known as a crown, is put in place.
  • Clear Aligners – Orthodontic care is another way to address diastemas, with one of the most popular approaches being clear aligners. This approach slowly adjusts the positioning of the teeth to close the gap and permanently leave your smile looking incredible.
