Prominently situated at the front of our mouths are our incisors, two large sharp teeth referred to as our “front teeth.” They’re also known by less complimentary terms as “buck teeth.” While it can be embarrassing for them to grow in before our other adult teeth, we’ll grow out of that phase, and they’ll be another part of a complete smile. Over the fullness of time, this can lead to the teeth slowly being pushed out of position, resulting in the formation of a diastema. However, this is just one potential cause. Other reasons we may develop a diastema are genetic in nature, caused by front teeth that grow smaller than usual. One other potential childhood cause is a lip or tongue tie. These ties involve an overgrown frenulum, the tissue that ties the gum to the lip or the tongue to the bottom of the mouth.
